Glaucoma

Have you ever heard of glaucoma? This condition affects an estimated 3 million Americans. At Brinegar Eye Care in Bloomington, IN, our eye care professionals have extensive clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of this common eye health condition.

Glaucoma

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma causes progressive vision loss and eventually blindness. It happens when the optic nerve, a bundle of fibers connecting your eye to the vision centers of your brain, is progressively damaged. This is usually, but not always, associated with increased inner eye pressure caused by either an interruption of inner eye fluid drainage or overproduction of said fluid.

A common misconception about glaucoma is that it's caused by high blood pressure. High blood pressure doesn't directly cause glaucoma, but it is a risk factor. Other risk factors include family history, smoking, extreme nearsightedness, diabetes, African or Latino ethnicity, aging, and prior eye surgery or trauma.

Glaucoma Symptoms to Look Out For

95 percent of all glaucoma cases are caused by open-angle glaucoma. This condition is most commonly asymptomatic in its early stages. After months or years, open-angle glaucoma can lead to loss of peripheral vision. In advanced stages, people may experience tunnel vision or complete blindness.

A less common type of glaucoma, known as acute angle-closure glaucoma, is considered a medical emergency. Seek immediate medical attention if you or a loved one begins to experience sudden eye pain, nausea and vomiting, blurry vision, eye redness, and the appearance of halos around bright lights.

Glaucoma Treatment with Our Brinegar Eye Care Team

There is no cure for glaucoma, and you can't regain your vision after it's been lost due to the disease. However, through early detection and treatment, our Brinegar Eye Care team can help you slow the progression of glaucoma and help you manage the condition. Common treatments we provide include medicated eye drops, oral medications, and laser eye surgery.

You may have noticed many of the risk factors for glaucoma are related to lifestyle, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and smoking. Our staff is happy to provide education and counseling to our patients, especially ones who are at risk, to help them reduce their risk of developing the condition.
